ahhhh, I see!
I always get the modal verbs like müssen screwed up in conjugation (ich muss, du musst, er muss/wir müssen, ihr müsst, sie müssen--ja?) I forgot the difference between lernen and studieren...so studieren is mainly used in reference to Uni? and lernen is for regular school stuff?
haha, my German teacher, Frau Baker, always said first thing, "Geben sie mir bitte die Hausaufgaben heraus!" She didn't let us get away with trying to finish up last night's homework in the first 5 minutes of class!

So were there compulsory language subjects or were these your choice?

Well, I can't remember if it was compulsory (there are 4 years in high school), but I think that to graduate, you either had to take 3 years of one language or 2 years of one language and 2 of another. There was only German, French or Spanish to pick from, and I hated both French and Spanish. It might have been compulsory if you wanted to have special honors on your degree or something. I had wanted to take German for years, and I stayed in it for 3 years. I was one of Frau Baker's best students in my class--I did better (A's and A+'s) in German than in English! haha

no, for school we say "study", as in "I'm studying for my test", "I'm studying for this class."
I think one way to know the difference is that "studying" is usually paperwork, or learning from a teacher, whereas "learn" is a more active form of studying. I'm learning a language, but studying for my test.
For a map, you could use either "reading" or "studying".

Busted!! Yes, I've been around here and there on the official Nightwish forum since the concert last month. I've developed a near-neurosis (they're all so drama!!) and a cyber-cuff from some chuffed hussy on an email list, too. Anyway, I've this is for the Florida gang: do any of you know a decent way for a body to get from Cape Canaveral to Orlando by public transport? No, I'm not in the warm, lovely, bright sunshine, ready to throw down at the rails with Kathy, Kim or Ginelly!...I'm up here in near-Winter Boston, but there's a tragic case of "suddenly no ride to the Nightwish concert" on the offical NW board and...well, it's really sad. Tickets purchased; a 2-year unexpected wait...the whole sickness. So I thought somekindbody might be able to give this person some advice. For example, we have a commuting rideshare thing through craigslist here in Beantown. He's freaking a bit, it seems (he's also 29...)-he's not come out directly and requested a ride from anyone there, but there's been offers; and I'm *not* asking anyone here to give him one!! Any ideas? The show is this Wednesday. Thanks MV-folks....! edit: this guy did have a ride, but the ride bailed recently...
