Black light troubles

So what has happened is that I bought the self titled album the other day, (As my first copy mysteriously disappeared) and I tried the black light once it twice and it didn't work. So I opened it up and the batteries flew out. I managed to find 3 of the batteries. So my first question is, are there meant to be 3 or 4 batteries? Secondly, if there are 3, in what way do you put them in?

The blacklight that came with mine has 4 small batteries in it. They all face the same direction with the + side (side with writing) facing the back and the - side facing the light.

Ok thanks a lot for that! Seems I have lost one battery then. It didn't work from the start so I guess maybe the batteries were flat or faulty. I'll just have to buy some more then.
