Some of you guys know that one of my female budgies, Lily has a pretty good tumor hanging off of her hind end. It's not really bothering her though, so I've let it be. Well, last night I noticed something weird on my other hen's wing. I pulled her out, and was appalled by the size and shape of over a dozen lumps on the elbow joint of her left wing. Take a look: I feel so awful! She's overweight, so I'm guessing this is a lipoma (fatty tumor). I'm about ready to leave for the vet's to have both of them checked out. I'm so nervous for them! Stormy is such a good girl, very sweet and quiet. I wish I'dve paid more attention to her so I might have seen this before it got so big! I know I'm going to have to fork out some money for these two, but if I know what's going on and treatment is reasonable, I hope it'll work for them! Cross your fingers for them

Okay, just came back from the vet. I love Dr. Elmer!
On Lily, he weighed and gave her a physical exam, and said that the mass by her vent felt like it was filled with fluid (what I was thinking too). He took her to the back, cleaned off her bum and the surface of the lump, and extracted 3cc's of fluid! He said after he did that he probed again with his fingers, and he felt some kind of visceral mass that could be pushed back into her abdominal cavity. His surmise was that she has a hernia of some sort, one that would be difficult to correct surgically, and that the sac would fill back up with fluid again. He said to keep an eye on it, but not to worry, it's not a cancerous mass. If it fills back up to just let it be and keep her bum clean.
On Stormy, after examining both wings and concluding that the one with the mass at the elbow joint was also non-cancerous, he felt two more tumors in her torso, one just the left of her chest, and another down by her abdomen. Lipomas, he said with 95% certainty. Extracting a biopsy would cause a lot of unnecessary trauma and would probably yield the same diagnosis.
I suggested and he agreed with switching all of my birds to a pellet-based diet, and give them lots of leafy greens and fruits.
He also didn't charge me to have the fluid aspiration on Lily, just $49 exam fee for each of the birds. A hundred bucks was worth putting my fears to rest.

Totally! I was pretty worked up about it this morning...heart racing, sick to my stomach. Mostly because I was worried they'd have to do surgery or worse, put either of them to sleep The girls have recovered from the visit. After I dropped them off at home I went to Petsmart and bought a bag of fruit flavored pellet food. All of them attacked it like there was no tomorrow! lol Here I was thinking it was going to be hard to change them over to pellets from seeds, hehe.
