Overall I think The New Game is pretty decent, but I don't think it quite matches up to their earlier stuff. I was pretty excited to hear MV was "going with a different sound" as I'd heard many times, but the "different sound" ended up being a little too radio-friendly at points. And as a fan of music in odd time signatures I was really bummed to only hear them in TWO songs.  Despite its shortcomings it's still getting a lot of playing time in my iPod. I'm just pissed I missed them live a few times since November. |

I give it a 9 out of 10. To me, The New Game is up there with L.D 50 and TEOATTC.
The sound is a little more broad and displays a different range for all of them and its still Mudvayne's trademark heaviness, you know.
With the lyrics, they've could have been a little better but one big complaint i had about them was that in every song, Chad keeps referring to himself or "I". It almost seemed like every song had to be about him. Then i read in an interview where Chad said for every different song, he put himself in a different headspace or different personality and wrote the song about himself and his thoughts, behavior, etc... After reading that, I was more impressed and respected the lyrics even more.
Great album and now I can't wait for the new self-titled album coming out soon

This new album, is totally changing our perspectives though.
We thought TNG was a little more 'radio friendly'...........I dunno guys, I can't really see Beautiful and Strange on the radio waves haha.

The New what??? Doesn't ring a bell haha, all I can think about is our beloved Sonic Ranch album. Aaaaaah the godo ol' days, before we knew the name of it, so we just called it Sonic Ranch. haha

Hate to say it, but I think that even my previous rating of 6.5/10 might have been a little generous. The New Game wasn't great to begin with, and at least for me it hasn't aged well at all. Hopefully with this new album, I'll be able to pretend 2006-now in Mudvayne history never happened. No offense to anybody who loves the New Game, I just think it was mostly uninspired, especially lyrically/vocally. Chad has done much better in the past. The self-titled appears to be a return to form, but only time will tell.
