Taken from the November issue of Revolver.
"I don't know if i'll ever have enough tattoos," says Chad Gray singer of math-metallers Mudvayne and Southern-fried supergroup HELLYEAH. For his latest work in progress, a giant demon octopus dubbed the "democtopus," Gray joined forces with legengary tattoo artist Paul Booth, owner of New York City shop Last Rites. "I always knew i wanted Paul to do [the octopus]. I met him at the [music and tattoo festival] Tattoo the Earth in 2001, and like an octopus, i sat in the dark and patiently waited until i could get my tentacles on him." In between shows on the Family Values tour, Gray talked about how he relates to his tatoos, and the one that almost made him puke.
01) Democtopus (lower right arm)
I'm just fascinated by octopuses. I've always wanted one because they sit in the depths and just kill shit, and theres no way to get away from them. I kinda feel like that, too, like im walking under a cloud sometimes, and want to kill! The face is looking at you with i'm holding my hand up, like im holding the microphone, so basically when im walking, its upside down. Paul is mostly known for his black and gray, but he's gonna do it in colour. Its pretty exciting.
02) Alien (top right arm)
I got the alien in the LD50 days of Mudvayne when we were dabbling in that headspace, speaking about drugs and ideas on consciousness. I kind of feel like i am an alien; sometimes i dont feel like im of this world. A friend of mine in Peoria, [Illinois] Tony Kelly, did this. He has a vert Paul Booth style kind of style. I love the whole thing but its really incomplete. Tony and i just never had a chance to finish it, with me moving out of Illinois. So Paul will be redoing that whole side.
03) Black Tribal (top left arm)
I used to have an armband and i kind of outgrew it. I believe tattoos mark chapters in your life, but it was a chapter i was willing to let go of. It was a huge band, three or four inches, and it was so intricate that i couldnt come up with anything to cover it up, so i decided to just go all black. Ive always wanted a large black piece, something that made a statement. The first sitting was six hours of just solid black work. By the end i was starting to get a fever and starting to get nauseous and my body was like "come on dude im getting ready to hurl at any second" its just a lot of body trauma. I mean i can endure pain thats not a big deal, but the relentlessness of it was the hardest part.
04) Tag (lower left shin)
This tag was done by my friend Jason Campbell. I wanted a Mudvayne tattoo, so i had him design it. Hes really good at that kind of stuff-hes a tag artist, too. I love it. It says Mudvayne, but it doesnt, you know? Its not, like MUDVAYNE!!! You gotta figure it out. I still have a hard time when im showing people. Im like "theres an M and i think that..yeah thats the V"
Under the photo of Chad and Paul:
Paul Booth: Does this hurt?
Chad Gray: Hell yeah!!
It didnt look like that much typing but it adds up lol.
Enjoy!
